Wow. I love those myrtle burls. I would love to know how those tops were constructed. Burl fitted into a groove in a mitred frame and this glued to an outer mitred frame?? Thank you for sharing, Ross.

They are 2 beautiful boxes. A lot of very precise work in them.
Do you make the wooden hinges or are they a purchased item?

Did you wax it after the Livos oil application, and what sort of mixture strength did you apply the oil? Tremendous finish!

Firstly Ross, the burl is sanded down to 6mm and inserted in the glued mitered 'picture frame' which is inserted in the sides. The trim is only 4mm deep so there are not 2 frames at all. The top is not glued in but 'floats' in the sides.

Hi Treecycle, the wooden hinges are made, quite simple to do and can be sanded / shaped to suit. Bamboo skewers are used for the pin and the wooden nails into the box. Sometimes I use brass rod.

Dengue, I use full strength Livos oil about 4 coats. It was the first time I had used it and I am not 'in love' with it. I normally use Liberon Danish Oil which has a slightly 'wetter' look. I don't usually wax because I prefer minimal gloss.

Billy, were you using the Livos Ardvos or Kunos? I find you get a 'wetter' look with the Kunos. I use it cut 50/50 with Bio thinners. I'm trying the Ardvos at present, but will go back to the Kunos, even though it's more expensive.

Hi Alex, yes spot on, it is the Ardvos, I don't think I want to pay $71 (.75ltr) plus freight for the Kunos.
