    Default Another box

I made this box for my 4yr old son to keep things in. The wood is oak with walnut pegs and a walnut handle. The construction is pretty simple although there was a small problem with splitting putting in the square pegs into round holes. My test hole I tried it on was in the middle of a board, once they are on the edges it increase the possibility of splitting. Anyway, I only had to fix one split. The key seems to be keeping the size of the square peg as close as possible to the round hole. This was the first time making a top of this style and it's secured with a brass rod for the hinge. It's simple but has enough to keep it interesting.

Spunky as. Would make a nice bread box too.

Love the contrast of the pegs and handle, and the grain is massive. But on that note...general opinion of everyone...how about the side being flipped to follow the grain on the front bottom half? I can't decide what would be better...technical lines or the aesthetics of it being "broken up".

Really quite lovely though. It's the simple things eh

Howdy neighbor. I've never met a box I didn't like and yours is easy to like.
That is really nice grain for oak even if it doesn't wrap around as suggested. I like your approach to reinforcing the mitered corners with square pegs. Splines are getting to be overdone I think. Can you tell us a little more about the construction of the bottom? How about the finish?

    Thanks,
    Jim

I echo the appreciation of the previous responders. And, with a lid with round corners fitting neatly inside the top of the box I am wondering how you did the internal fit around those round corners? Is it a separate corner piece glued in and then rounded?

Same as above - well done. Your son is a lucky lad.

Nice box Northlander. Agree with the grain comments.

The square pins are interesting, I may have to try with my mortice chisel.

    neat,

The comment about the grain is a good one, I didn't even think about it until now. The bottom of the box is just a 1/4 piece of ply, I didn't get too fancy since I expect the box to see some abuse, especially if my son is anything like I was as a kid. The finish was a little stain to darken it up with a few coats of polycrylic. The lid was made by routing a 1/2 rabbet around the top, cutting a piece with square corners, then rounding the corners until it fits, it's not an exact science and you could spend more time to get a more exact fit.

    A fine looking box Northlander.
Love the sq pegs in the round hole idea... I seem to have been doing that metaphorically all my life..
