Default Making a pencil case type box

    Hi all,

A simple question, I cant come up with a simple solution. Those old style timber pencil cases we used to take to school. How do they make those little finger pull slots in the lid,..?

I've just been asked to make 100 of these boxes within the next two weeks. A woman I know has gone into a business making natural cakes of soap.

She wants a box made similar to those old pencil cases, to put the cake of soap in, plus then another 100 timber soap holders to be used to sit the cake of soap in, on your vanity.

I really need to be able to make these as simple as, and to mass produce them.

    Paul

    Hi Paul
    Here's a option.

    Udklip.PNG
Make a jig that hold the lid in an angle at about 60. Drill the pull slot with a Forstner bit on the Drill Press.
    Hope it's usefull.

    Cheers Ole

You might have success using a router bit in a drill press. You would need every bit of speed the press has! Then make up a support "ramp" that the lid would sit/locked on then bring down the press to a preset stopped position
    Just do it!

Thanks Rod, another good thought there, I shall try that also.

I've been through Moonbi many times on our way to Tamworth. Nice little country village. I notice that craft shop on the main drag didn't last long, turned into a house now.

That Cafe/Gift shop was on the site of an old Coaching Inn. The smaller building on the right has a small cellar where they stored the liquid refreshments and general stores in the building.
The whole idea was a good one. The owner had Alpacas and would have some in a pen for the punters to feed/patt. There was a small collection of craft for sale inside the main building. A couple of crafty women approached the owner to see if she could sell some of their wares, but were put off when the owner wanted "to see if the quality was good enough" before they could display their stuff. It seemed like the owner's attitude to a lot of things brought her unstuck and the Cafe just fizzled out. The new owner is using the buildings as a residence only.

It seems that some people can make a success of something while others just can't

Paul, Sing out next time you are passing through. We are only 5 minutes out of the village.
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Grind the point off a pocket hole jig drill and use the pocket hole jig.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

A half core box router cutter in a router table with the piece held vertical will give you the shape you need.

I was going to suggest that but the slot might need to be a bigger diameter?

actually if the boxes are only for sale and presentation than would just a simple hole in the lid do the job?

Hi all, and thanks for all your replies. I started to make a sample box yesterday, made it from western red cedar, not a timber I really like to use. I made the sides to thin (6mm), just too flimsy. The box itself wont be that large. Then,.........the woman come back again last night and changed her mind for the lid to perspect. Says she can get a print shop to make little stickers with the contents of the soap, and stick that onto the lid, and the cake of soap is still visible through the lid.

    Anyway...!!!

She, through various sources has access to some timber, and this morning whilst I was off playing lawn bowls, she has dropped in a heap of lengths of white cedar,...........never used that before, and now wants the boxes made from that. So I am about to start ripping up some of this white cedar, see how it dresses up.

I actually like the idea of the hole in the lid. Anything to save me time.

And Rod, thanks for the offer regarding Moonbi. My wife's mother was in a nursing home at Tamworth for 5 years, we used to travel across pretty regularly. However sadly she passed away end of July, so our trips across that way now wont be happening that much.

    Regards, Paul
