    Default Pill Box

I was over at my mother's house fixing some things for her and I noticed that she was using one of those plastic medication reminder boxes that you pick up at the drug store for about three bucks. My mother is 84 and, like many of us, takes a pill here and there daily to keep her running right. The plastic box didn't look very nice sitting there on her breakfast table and it got me thinking. Here is the prototype medication minder that I came up with. I think more will follow, but she's getting this one for her birthday next month. The box is bocote and ebony and the pill tray is curly maple with canarywood dividers (this is why I never throw away even the smallest scrap). The hinges are solid brass from Brusso and the finish is lacquer. This box could also be used to organize small items or to store small jewelry like earrings. Hope you all like it.

Way to go, Cisco! While the pills are a necessary evil, that minder is gallery grade.
Certainly gives great justification to the scrap box.
I'm steaming along with the $3 special, 2 weeks load at a time.
She is going to be so thrilled.

Very nice work Cisco. Were you tempted to segregate the days further? E.G. AM & PM or maybe AM, Midday and PM?

What you see is the first prototype. Twice a day and perhaps even three times a day versions are kicking around in my head. Stay tuned.

Excellent idea and execution. I like the way you've curved the bottom into the front & back of the compartments, so it's easy to roll the tablets out, rather than fiddle around trying to pick them up. The whole appearance is really nice.

Excellent! I really like it. As Alex and others have mentioned, I really like the curved bottom.

Have you got any photos of actually building the box?

    Thanks for sharing.

Forgot to mention this = in my $3 "plastic special," the compartments are exactly the right size to jam a big pill and a little pill, side-by-side = they don't/won't fall out. Another 1/16" wider and I'd never notice.

As all have said, looks great. Better than a piece of plastic.

Very distinct timber (bocote), never seen it before.

How did you cove the top of the ends and the compartments?

Opening that up I would expect to find a diamond encrusted telescope or some such treasure Absolutely gorgeous, and so precisely crafted - well done

Used a 3/4" cove bit in a router table to cove the tops of the ends. Raise the bit gradually so as to not take too much material out at one time. Used a 1-1/4" bowl bit in a router table to create the compartment tray. Again, only take about 1/4" of material off with each pass. The tray is more than 1-1/4" across and I simply achieved that by moving the fence after finally getting to my target depth. It was this procedure that caused me the most caution on this project. Router tables scare me at the best of times and running a board down this thing with the bit completely buried in the board gave me the willies. I used extra care and push pads.
