The Pink Box
Hi all,
l was requested by my 5 year old daughter to make a new jewellery/keep sake box as her ever growing collection of necklaces, bracelets, and other stuff out grew the old one. So we went into the shed and found some pine that would fit the bill, all good I thought, then came the curve ball......I want it pink. Now I could of painted it I know, but I wanted to still see the wood, so I thought I would give dyeing a go.
This box is a first for me in many ways, the first box I have finished with hand cut dovetails that is not hiding somewhere out of site, the first time I have dyed (ubeaut red) wood and used shellac (ubeaut white shellac), the first time I raised a panel by hand (the lid) and the first time I have ever lined anything with paper.
so here it is.... Go easy on me....
A pine dovetailed box, lined with Japanese paper, dyed pink, finished with white shellac and furniture polish.
One happy girl

Hi,
Who cares what we think, that smile on your daughters face should be reward enough for any one.
Satisfying your own sensitivities with wood dye etc deserves even more Brownie points, I wouldn't have even thought of it I would have just got the paint out.
Good job all round.
RegardsHugh

Great story and a great result.
Well done. And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

It shouldn't only be a little girl with a smile on her face, the maker should have one too. It looks great with some good old fashioned hand skills involved.

Thanks guys for the kind words. Yes Kirra, my daughter, was rather pleased with it, though it took a little too long to build according to her.
I was rather happy with the finished product too, it taught me a lot and increased my confidence. It is nice when something turns out more or less the way you want it to.
I reckon you might be right there artme, but first her mother wants one or was that the daybed she requested first...... the list is ever growing.
Thanks again for the kind words

Excellent result all round, getting the DT's as crisp as you did in pine is exceptional. A Happy child always puts a smile on the face and is worth the work as they are so grateful. Take a bow Dad.

Thanks TTIT for the kind words.
I used ubeaut red dye and diluted it quite a bit to get the pink colour, I did a few test off-cuts to get the colour dilution right. I heated the dye solution up in the microwave to about boiling then I wiped in on hot, it had cooled down a little by the time got to applying it. I then let it sit for about a minute and wiped off the excess that didn't absorb. In the end I think I gave it two applications of dye. I pretty much followed the instruction sheet that came with the dye pack.
It worked better then I was expecting I must say, as I had heard/read pine can go blotchy. There are areas that didn't take up as much and they are a little lighter but they blend in well. I reckon it makes it a little more interesting and with the polish finish it changes colour intensity depending on the light angle.

I think you have done a great job on the box.
I have also used the red dye on a few pieces but never diluted it to a pink. It has come out quite well.
