Post Plans for a watch storage box for a beginner

Hi all. I have done lots of projects, but no "fine" woodworking projects. I have a few things on the go - shelving, entertainment unit, that sort of thing, however I would like to learn some nice finer joinery techniques and make some simple nice features.
I thought a great place to start would be a watch storage box, for about 10 large watches. I'm thinking the type with a little pillow or padded cutout to strap a watch onto. A solid lid preferable to a "window". The interior would be lined to prevent scratching.

    This sort of thing (design-wise)

Could anyone point me towards n achievable design? I have all sorts of Aussie hardwoods lying about. Main challenge (and new thing to learn) will be the style of joinery, simple inlays, that sort of thing. It's about time I learned how to do all this!!

    Cheers, Mat (Melbourne)

You could talk to the Victorian Woodworkers Association - they might run courses in which you can get help with the design and guidance while you make it at the course. It's probably not a bad project to start on as you can decide what sort of corner joints, timbers, dimensions etc. A good teacher will help you with whatever you decide.

Start small and simple with just the outside box. Look for easy but strong joinery like rabbets (rebates) which can be cut with just a saw and chisel. Practice with your hardwood scraps because if using hand tools the tools work differently and getting to know the nasty habits of wood grain. Just start with what you have and progressing. You could have a look at threads started in the box making sub-forum by double.d or Pauls321. double.d tends to favour mitred joinery and has posted some very nice watch boxes. Pauls321 tends to prefer dovetails (Gifkins jig), but has made some smaller ring boxes using very simple joinery that could be a good place to start.
