    Default Pole-cabinet/box - Catch needed.

I finally got started on replacing the 'pole-cabinet' that has been bugging me for years for various reasons. The old Rose Mahogany one requires two hands to get things in and out and doesn't have enough room to store the Foredom angle grinder attachment so it had to go.
Drew the new one up in Sketchup and took a few photos of this project along the way as I was going to do a WIP . . . but never got time to sit at the computer and actually do it . Now I'm ready to oil the outside and can't figure an easy way to latch the fold-down doors. I was originally thinking ball-catches but I don't want that 'jolt' as it releases upsetting the contents - namely all my cutters etc for the Foredom. Magnets will give the same problem - need a positive catch with a simple release mechanism . . . any ideas please??? (Gap between the top of the doors and the body is about 2mm)

Try these quadrant stays - you can adjust the "tension" so that it keeps the door closed but with some pressure open it all the way down. Quadrant Stays, alternatively one of their catches will work as well. Deco Push Button Catches

Thanks for that ! - the push button catch would just about do the trick if I extended the hook part but that could be tricky - might have to buy one just to see if it's doable

Got sidetracked a bit . . . while I've been putting some finish on the box and trying to work out what sort of catch to use the ply inserts in the doors started to bug me - they were a nice close fit and so on but there isn't much difference between the NG Rosewood ply and the Peltophorum frame so it looked really bland. Decided it was time to try my hand at some stringing. Had to make a scratch stock first and got a bit carried away for something I might only use once in a blue moon Used a handsaw to cut about 6 metres of Sally wattle stringing from some stock I ran through the drum sander down to 2.2mm . . . only needed about 1.2m but I'm sure I'll do more of this down the track. Very happy with the way it worked for first try and the doors won't annoy me now every time I walk into the shed . . . unless I don't find a catch to hold them up!

    Default Over-ambitious??

Couldn't find anything on the market that works they way I want so I thought I might have a go at making my own catch seeing I have the mini metal lathe sitting there. Drew it up in Sketchup but don't know if I can muster the accuracy required to pull this off - time will tell! Waiting on a 4mm slot drill before I get started. Any ideas before I go wasting precious chunks of brass??

Default Was worth the effort . . .

Very happy with the way the latches worked out and they work like a charm - nice click as they close and they open as smooth as silk. Fitted them into a piece of scrap first to make sure everything was as it should be and get the screw lengths sorted etc.
The cabinet is ready to load with gadgets now and I'll work out what I'm putting in the upright part of the chisel side later - at this stage the only thing to go in there is the Foredom chisel which will sit on the bottom for now. Tried to get the fiddleback in the Peltophorum to show in the photos but couldn't manage it so it will just have to be something I get to enjoy each time I go in the shed.
Not quite the Studley toolchest but I'm going to enjoy using this one for sure!

That has come up a treat. I had looked at your latch design and couldn't see why it wouldn't work if the parts were machined well and it appears that you have certainly done that.

Good stuff Vern. Looks great and sounds like like it works great too.
I reckon you could patent your design and go into production, might make a nice retirement sideline for you

G'day Brad. Wouldn't be much demand for this configuration of catch though - keeping drawers closed in mobile cabinets or caravans would be about the limit of their use . . . and the speed of production would be of great concern to my book-keeper
