Positioning concealed mini barrel hinges
I have 5mm diameter concealed hinges as shown attached.
These are to fit a box and lid with 8 mm wall thickness.
My question is, where do I drill the centre of the 5mm holes - 4mm in from the back wall of the box, or 5 mm?regards,
Dengy

I don't know the "correct" answer but I would go for 4mm in, ie central.
Reasons:
- at 5mm from the back you will only have 0.5mm from the edge of the hole to the inside face of the back wall. I consider this too risky but others may think it is acceptable.
- my understanding of these hinges is that there must be a bevel on the back wall and the lid, starting at the centre of the hinge ie the pivot point. Using 5mm in from the back means a 5mm bevel instead of a 4mm bevel. I would prefer the smallest bevel I could get away with.Cheers, Bob the labrat

I agree, go with the 4mm. I have some 4mm versions of those concealed hinges (I think), tucked away somewhere that I purchased some years ago.

Hi Joe,
There is a Wood Whisperer video on YouTube where Marc S fits 5mm barrel hinges. He sets the outside edge of the hole 1/16” from the back. It’s worth a look and has decent cc.
268 - Scrapwood Jewelry Box - YouTube The hinge fitting starts around 6mins 24 secs.
The video also shows his process for the back bevels.
Look forward to seeing what you’ve created this time!
Best regards,
Brian

I use these on nearly all my small boxes, you can get smaller ones from china 3mm. I use a brad pint drill bit from JTA tools very good accurate holes. if you try to push the holes too far toward the back you risk the wood chipping out when the hinge is pressed in. I also use a thick CA glue. This works for the rare earth magnets to hold the lid closed. I cut the 45' with a router bit being careful about chipout as at the end you are cutting end grain if it is a mitered box.
