Project 3 - She Oak Box
This is the third of the Grandchildren projects. My Grandson requested that I make him a box to keep some of his special things in. The box is made from WA She Oak with a spalted sassafras lid. The divider can be removed and is held in place by removable dowels in each end of the box.
The finish is wipe on polly followed by EEE.Bob
"If a man is after money, he's money mad; if he keeps it, he's a capitalist; if he spends it, he's a playboy; if he doesn't get it, he's a never-do-well; if he doesn't try to get it, he lacks ambition. If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Very nice box Bob. I like the two lidded approach. What size is it? Is it WA She Oak or Rose Oak? I think the later, I have some of both and find the WA Oak to be much darker. I may be wrong.

Billy

That is an absolutely gorgeous box. I take it that dowels are let into the sides at each end to swing the lid. That is very precise geometry to get them so neat - any tips?

Well done, thats a sensational result - your grandson will no doubt be delighted!
Can you tell us where you got the spalted sassafras?
Thanks

Thanks for the responses.
Billyboydes - the dimensions are 241 x 178 x 76 at the ends. The timber was sold as WA she oak. It was the nice lace figure that got my attention. You will notice that there is light (sap wood?) at the top of the box that makes for a nice transition to the lighter sassafras.
Fencepost - The lids are swinging on 3mm brass rod. No secrets here. The smaller the piece the more accurate the measurements and cutting. As anyone will tell you, a marking knife makes for more accuracy than a pencil.
Thornburn - I picked the spalted sassafras at last years wood working show. Can't remember who the vendor was. I will be looking for some more this year, though I still have some.Bob

Your box reminds me of a comment I heard by James Krenov
"if I can't find the right piece of timber for the door, there is no point building the cabinet".
Your lid certainly makes an impact.Scally
