prototype
This box is a bit different than many shown up here in that it is a throwaway prototype in cheap radiata pine to try out tools, techniques and ensure that the client gets what they expect.
I have been commissioned to build five boxes to house bottles of whisky. These will be glue lam in hardwood alternating dark red and light brown hardwood to make a striped pattern.
I have a new table saw and new router and router table and so wanted to be sure that everything worked the way I wanted it to. I also wanted to make my mistakes early so that I am not throwing away good elements that have taken a bit of work to create. As it was the laser engraving on the lid didn't work. The lid is too thick for my cutter/engraver.
This was also an opportunity to get the dimensions right. Bottles are hard to measure, I have mitre joints etc. I cut too big and then cut down until it was perfect. It also means I can take any measurements off the prototype.
The client has signed off on the design, based on the prototype, and we are good to go.

Very sensible idea; you’ve obviously thought this through

Box is looking good. So how are you going to get around the fact that your lid is too thick for your laser engraver. May I ask, which model is it.

Paul,
I have a 40w CO2 cheap chinese laser. It is called by many things by the vendors but on the internet it is generally referred to as a K40. As for the engraving, I will just not do it. I wasn't sure it would show up - reddish brown - against the light brown and dark red box in the real versions.
Cheers Paul

Hi Paul, ahh yess, I've looked at those a few times. I've got 2 cheap chinese lazer engravers, one does 40mm x 40mm. Other does 80mm x 80mm. They are very slow, particularly the 80x80 one. Different sort of setup on each of them. Different sort of axis setup. They do come in handy at times when someone wants something engraved, but they can be a real pain in the butt when things go wrong.
