    Default Purple box

Hi guys. I haven't been around much lately, but am trying to get back into the swing of things. Here's a purpleheart box with a curly maple lid. Brusso hinges and the finish is shellac. Comment and criticisms welcome.

    That is a beautiful box!

I love the hinges, were did you get them? Were they easy to install?

    Great work,

Nice contrasts, and yes I like those hinges as well. Anything suitable for 10mm thickness timbers?

Glad you are back getting into the swing of things. Great box! I too like the swing of your lid. Tell us more about the hinges.

Thanks, guys. Glad you like the box. These are one of my very favorite hinge styles for two reasons. Ease of installation and the built in stop. I bought them from Rockler, but I'm sure there are Brusso dealers where you are. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=21468

They measure 5/16" wide (7.9mm) so they may just work with 10mm timber. I've successfully used them on 7/16" timber. All it takes is a 5/16" diameter straight bit for your router. I set the bit depth equal to the hinge thickness and set the router table's fence so that the bit is centered on the timber thickness. Set up a stop block where you want the groove to stop and clamp it to the table. Route one side of the box and one side of the lid and relocate the stop block to the other side of the bit and repeat the process. Nothing could be simpler. These hinges are solid brass and very well made.
Thanks again for the kind comments. One thing I discovered when making this box is that applying the shellac as soon as the purpleheart reaches its brightest purple (about two days) seems to freeze the color there. This box was made a couple of months ago and only just completed and it is as purple today as it was when I first finished it. Perhaps the shellac acts as a UV inhibitor?

Nice work Cisco box looks great. Hinges are really nice but a bit pricey.
