    Default Puzzle box

This is a puzzle box that needs 65 moves to open (or close). It uses a combination of sliders that allow the centre discs to be rotated to eventually get to the stage where the lid can be removed. The design is by a young guy in The Netherlands and plans are available from his website. It is a challenge to make as it requires some accuracy in the making and plenty of patience to get all the parts sliding correctly.
The box was constructed from some Sydney Blue Gum that was machined to 5 mm thick. The sliders are Huon Pine and the corners are made from some Blackwood that had a birds eye pattern throughout.
I have added the corners to give the box a bit of bling and to hide the screws I used to hold it together. It is a very very difficult puzzle to solve as the 65 moves must be done in the correct sequence. The plans are available here. http://www.bennoboxes.com/
There is also a You Tube video here. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLBR5zgHo00
It was a fun project ..........but there is not going to be a second one!

These are pictures of the box closed and all six sides are identical in appearance. The box is 140mm cube.

The last pictures show the box opened with the lid removed. Just another 65 simple moves to put the lid back on to fully close the box. QED

    Thanks.

However, I am on the look out for something simpler for younger minds. Any suggestions for the sub 6 year old bracket?

That is amazing, Ruddy. Talk about being masochistic. That must have been a very frustrating and intricate job. Well done

Just a thought, what do you keep in this box? Car keys?

Does it come with a hammer, in case of emergency?
    regards,

    Hi Dengy...
At my age the brain needs nourishment and this project gave me plenty. I have made a few puzzle boxes in recent years and this one really made the brain hurt. I think it will remain closed for most people as it is insanely difficult because of all the incorrect options. Just perfect for those teenagers who know everything!
No hammer, no axe but I do have instructions.

I would imagine that it would be technically "closed" in a lot less than 65 moves, but not fully back to the start position. (yes I am being pedantic)

All the same a very nice piece of work which would prabably have frustrated many of us enough to never complete.

    Cheers

They say as you age, you either become a sage and become wiser or lose your marbles and turn crazy.

Not sure which describes this, but it is wonderful work as usual.

    Thanks for sharing Ruddy

    Hi Greg,
Those corner pieces were made from Blackwood I got from you a couple of years ago.
I often think I am in the group that has a few less marbles because to tackle something like this you know you are in for a period where you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about the challenge.
In all seriousness, I have a very close mate who is in the mid stages of dementia and it is cruel to see it happen. You have to keep exercising the brain.
    regards

Very interesting bit of work Ruddy . You'll get no competition from me with this stuff - I made a wire puzzle about 30 year ago and came across it when moving into the new shed - it only has about five pieces and I couldn't even remember how to solve that!!!
