    Default quadrant hinges

    Hi,
I am researching creating a repro of an 18th Century writing box. The lid on these flop back through 180 degrees to create a sloped writing surface. They use quadrant hinges for this.

Most quadrant hinges nowadays are rated at 90 - 95 degrees with an in-built stay. If the stay is removed, do these go to 180 degrees or do they have other fixing?

    Many thanks in advance

Have a look at some of the hinges from Graeme Brown Antiques. Start on page 56 of their catalogue.

Anton Gerner sells quadrant hinges. Pretty sure Timbecon does too.

I think they do go to 180 if the stay is removed.

    betchern0t,

I do appreciate that you want to replicate an antique box, but using quadrant hinges with the stay removed will look a little ugly. Would you consider something like a side rail hinge - Brusso does a very good quality hinge here
https://www.brusso.com/sr-301/ This hinge folds flat to 180 degrees, is solid brass and strong.

If you are wedded to the idea of an L-shaped hinge have a look on eBay UK or Etsy - they often have secondhand hardware from old boxes.

    best regards,

    Brian

Whatever hinge you decide to use, I’d be very interested to see the project when it’s finished!

Quadrant hinges are usually symmetrical, that is not what you need. You are after a writing slope hinge. Here you go. Not too expensive.

    Alday,
the critical size is the width of the arms which needs to fit on 19mm timber. So say around 10mm. The smallest box I found was 21cm deep so as long as they aren't tiny the other dimensions don't matter. And since I haven't drawn the plans yet, there is a fair bit of room to move. This started as - "I have that red oak that has been sitting there..."

    Hi Brian,
A rail hinge as you suggest is indeed a fall back - probably not Brusso though my workmanship is such that it doesn't deserve that level of quality. The big issue is that from the pictures I have seen, the extra arms are used to also attach the leather writing surface. I am thinking those surfaces consist of two large pieces of timber and two small strips that are morticed into the back walls of the box in a rebate that leaves some of the original back so you can't see them when closed.

I checked both UK ebay and etsy. There is currently nothing suitable.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

    Cheers Paul
