    Default Quilted hard maple box

A great deal of the figured maple in the US is soft maple and I've worked with it a lot. Digging through my wood pile recently, I came upon a board of hard maple that I had purchased many years ago and it had gotten buried and forgotten. It was rough cut and had "Premium Quilted Hard" written on it in crayon but a few passes through the planer cleaned it up real nice. Certainly harder than soft maple, I had to exercise caution while setting the brass screws for the hinges.

The box measures 318 x 172 x 102. Timber is 15mm thick. Ebony lift, Brusso hinges, and suede bottoms. Dovetails are hand cut. Finish is Bush oil and wax.

This one is going out to an old work mate of mine who got me started woodworking many years ago. I hope he enjoys it as a Christmas present.

My wife says that it looks like it's moving when she walks past it. Extremely chatoyant. I sanded it to 800 and the oil really popped the figuring.

Very nice box and dovetails. Those curly timbers do pop when a finish is applied and makes you feel that all your work was well worthwhile.
