Default Red Cedar & Burl Box

I had some red cedar leftover and a small piece of unknown burl off cut which was enough for a box 180x110x70mm in size. It came up quite nice I think and SWMBO said it’s a keeper.

The burl was a bit thin of varying thickness and a little unstable so after the initial glue up I filled the back with a 5 minute epoxy resin for strength. Probably not the right product, but it was all I had on hand.

Finish is several applications of uBeaut white shellac thinned 50% applied with a rubber and a light rub back with 0000 steel wool and uBeaut traditional wax.

I have to say I am really liking the shellac finishes. It’s somewhat satisfying to see that deep lustre devoid of brush marks developing. It takes time, which I have plenty of, and somewhat therapeutic.

Nice work! Glad you're learning the beauty of shellac. It's one of the nicest finishes around, or as a sanding sealer under oil. It not only makes the grain jump out at you, but gives the wood a nice feel.

Very nice burl. I have been trying thick superglue to stabilize fragile pieces of wood, also mixing with fine sawdust to be a filler. takes 5 - 10 minutes to cure enough blue painters tape or glad wrap to stop the clamps sticking to the wood.
