I use the clear #244 kunos oil mixed 50/50 with their bio thinners. It's expensive at $77 for 750ml but well worth it.

Default Red cedar and Silky oak medal box

    Thanks for the comments.

Over the past 4 years I've had lots of requests to build these medal boxes. More often than not I have to say no due to time constraints.

I'm thinking of making a set of jigs that will enable me to batch out these boxes so there is no measuring involved. I've made multiple boxes before in one go, but never made jigs for future builds.

The box below is a box I made a few years ago and the design that I'll be using with some minor adjustments.

I was wondering if anyone has made furniture/boxes etc in bulk/production and has any helpful tips?

At the moment my ideas are:
-crosscut sled with built in stops.

-cut and pre finish lid/base in bulk so I can glue up the box straight away instead of waiting a few days to finish them.

    Cheers

Work out the most efficient process and try to stick to it without having to go back to do something you've forgotten.
Concurrent action - something you're probably familiar with, e.g. have finishes drying while you're doing something else. If you're doing a batch, you'll often find that the first bit of shellacking is dry by the time the last bit is finished.
Avoid having to go back and fix minor dings after you've sanded everything. I usually scrape down the bench before each job, and put paper down when gluing up. Once the box is sanded, I usually work on an old towel.
Do complicated things in the morning when you're not so tired. (OK, depends on how well the baby's sleeping, I guess.)

That work and the colour variation is just stunning groeneaj. Beautiful work.

Re the price...hope you are decanting the 750 ml tin as it will do soooo many boxes. It actually covers 12 sq mts all 3 coats, undiluted...so actually when one see it this way and for the type of product you get, it isn't too bad at all.

Default Red cedar and Silky oak medal box

Thanks Alex you got some good points there. Working on an old towel is a good one, nothing worse than scratching a nicely finished surface.

Angela, yes I store the 50/50 mixture into a stop loss bag and only pour out the required amount.

I gave the box a light wax and buff this morning. I also decided to bring down my personal medal that I built about 4 and a half years ago. I haven't maintained it, so a light wax was certainly due.

The fully dovetailed box (my one) is the design that I am thinking of building in bulk with some minor changes.

    Default Lid design and construction

Well done Andy, and many thanks for sharing. It certainly is a beautiful box. The finger lift is quite distinctive, great design!

Can you please tell us a bit about the lid design and construction? Eg., the frame thickness, the panel thickness, and how the silky oak panel fits in the frame. Are the frame sides morticed and tenon jointed? What made you do that joint rather than a mitred joint on the frame?
    regards,

    Dengy
