Default Red Cedar Watch and Cufflink box

Hi all, A few weeks ago a woman down in Melbourne asked me could I make her a box to hold 4 watches, plus up to 5 pairs of cufflinks, plus another compartment for tie bars etc. All for her husband/partner. And she had seen another box I had made from Aust Red Cedar and wanted the same timber.

A bit fiddly getting all the compartments to line up and still look good. So I made two of these boxes, both identical. Other box is partly finished as hopefully someone else will want it and have whatever they want engraved on it.

This AR Cedar is very old, could be anywhere up to 100 years old, with a darkish twisted grain. The other box is more reddish cedar.

All compartments lined with black velvet baize and padded velvet bases. Cufflinks section, soft padded ring holders. Bit hard to see the black in the photos.

Another fine example of your craftsmanship. Smart idea of using your ring holder design for the cufflinks.
Did you also make the watch holders too? Is the baize attached to card and then fitted into the cavities?

    Cheers,
    Dallas

Thank you Dallas and double.d Yes Dallas I buy that baize from Carrolls woodwork supplies down your way. It has the adhesive backing and I attach and bend it over some of that 1mm white cardboard (I buy from the local newsagent). I do the long sections of the compartments first, hot melt glue gun them onto the sides, dry in seconds. Then I do the short sections, tuck them in neatly. I only go to this much trouble on watch boxes. A few years ago a bloke wanted to buy one of my watch boxes and asked could I line the sides as he didn't want to risk scratching his expensive watches against the timber. Hmm, good point, so now I do it.

Thanks Fumbler. I do the engraving. I bought the Ortur LM2 20W system earlier this year. I made the lid insert/frame section, sanded the inside down to 3000 grit, did the engraving, then glued the lid section onto the rest of the box. Hence the engraving was all performed on a nice flat surface 12mm thick, sitting on the bed I made for the Ortur. When you google that Ortur system you will notice how large it is, takes an area 430mm x 400mm. I got some 3mm MDF, drew a grid all over it, lines about 20mm apart, parrallel, sits neatly inside the legs of the Ortur. I can place whatever onto that grid, line it all up nice and square and it just sits there while the engraving takes place.

Just as an interest, this is all in my downstairs room, which I cleaned out and its now my resin and lazer room. A lot of people who buy that Ortur (huge group on FB world wide), build all these fancy boxes with expensive optical density glass for viewing etc, and have fans installed in them for the fumes. Mine sits on a table right next to a large open window. I have a spy camera (Jaycar) sitting next to the Ortur and I can set it all up, press start, walk away and sit here in the lounge room and watch it working on my smartphone.

Fumbler, I have my engraving done by Kopycut in Thornleigh. They are very good and understand different timbers .
