Redgum & Huon Pine
This is a box I finished recently as a trial. Our club received a donation of Fiddleback Redgum which was subsequently stored away for a couple of years because a number of people thought it was no good only seeing it in its rough sawn state. I decided to have a go at it to form my own opinion. I dressed a piece up and the grain in it was spectacular, giving a 3D effect so I thought I would make a box from it to show what it could come up like.
I was able to get enough length to be able to grain match all the way around by resawing down the middle. It wasn't easy to work with as it was quite splintery and lots of stresses when cut. I left it to settle for a couple of months after cutting but even then it still moved a bit after the box was made.
I have used a solid panel of Huon Pine for the lid insert, splines and feet. I finished it all with Tru Oil, but I still have a lot to learn on its application even after Homey's advice.
The last photo gives you an idea of the size.
I think I changed the opinion of the wood with a number of people and I will see if I can get some more before its all gone.

Hey there Dallas, nice looking box there mate. Goes nice with the huon pine. You were very patient leaving the timber all that time, well done.

Very nice work Dallas, and the pens are gorgeous. Those timbers go well together.

Ripper job there Dallas!
I have a number of bits in the shed that suffer the same unwarranted overlooking.... They're rough or still in log firm, but once cut dressed or finished they show off the hidden diamond that they are.
Very nicely made box, I really like the contrast in the timbers (and love the contents )
Cheers

Hi Dallas,
Great box and I agree that the timbers work well together! Redgum - particularly Forest Red Gum - is such a beautiful wood for boxes. A bit tough on the tools but it finishes so well and you’ve certainly shown its beauty.
