Thread: a few more Resin Boxes

Wow, that's doing it the hard way. I use spiral downcut bits in 4mm, 1/8" and 3/32" diameters depending on what the job demands. I never would have thought of using a rebate/rabbet bit. We all have our own methods, eeh.

Thanks for the tips, the epoxy was done a couple of months ago, I may have been going at it a bit hard, I lightly sanded it with a white sanding pad marked extra fine made for automotive paint and it seems to be ok. Will see how it goes with the EEE polish. If it doesn't polish up OK I will clean it of, rough it up and paint on thin coat of epoxy and start again.

If you are not happy with the surface then do not polish it. Not sure what the epoxy would do after polishing.

Might work, issue is probably about removing all traces of polish.

Without the polish, there is no benefit in roughing the surface before applying a second coat of epoxy. I just apply a coat of straight acetone (or MEK) just before applying epoxy 2.

If epoxy is applied within 24 hours then it forms a chemical bond. If it is applied after 48 hours then it forms a mechanical bond. Between 24 & 48 hours then it may be a mixed bond. My hypothesis is that the acetone treatment assists the bonding process.

Do a LOT of that at work. Just about all clear in gum veins -etc. every now and then in black. Haven't tried the colours/ pearl/ metalics yet.

Hi gang, I mentioned a while ago I had got a lot of my smaller pieces of timber that I kept putting aside, put them into 3 piles of varying sizes, ripped them all down to 69mm, then through my home made drum sander down to 10mm. And went about making 23 boxes, all the same style, but in 3 sizes.

160 x 90 x 70
180 x 120 x 70
200 x 140 x 70

All with resin lids. I am slowly progressing through the 23, boxes were finished some time ago, resin lids take a lot longer.

All made with the technique that Gifkin Col had on his show several weeks ago. Simple style. And all with 3mm ply pine bases.

Reasons being, to get rid of a lot of my timber, particularly the smaller stuff. To have a bit of a range of cheaper priced boxes on Etsy.

That's quite an array of smaller boxes you have put together there Paul. I'm sure they will appeal to a lot of people.
I hope you have a fool proof method of drilling for those barrel hinges to prevent frustration and hair pulling😣

Hi and thanks Dallas. I used to pull my hair out also with those 5mm barrel hinges. Then I watched Gifkin Col several weeks ago and he made that little brass gadget, works perfectly. Go back one page or so on my thread here and I have a pic of it there.

There is one thing to note with that brass gadget. Make several of them as continual drilling through them with your 5mm bit, will wear into them and the holes wont line up perfectly. I fell for that trap but it didn't effect anything as I have my boxes finished, top part (that becomes the lid), cut off, hinges glued. If it is out a smidgeon or so, that gets all tidied up after my resin lid is glued on and flood coat put on. When cured enough to handle ok, (some days later), final sand on all sides with ROS and mirka pads from 80 through to 1000, brings everything all nice and neat and smooth. Then Danish Oil and wax.

But if I make more of these, which I probably will, I will make several of the brass gadget, and toss them away as they become the slightest bit worn.

Very nice as usual and that's a big task you have taken on. I guess it keeps you off the streets. I hope you haven't worn out too many of those drilling jigs for the hinges or if you have, do you have better access to the right brass extrusion than Col?

Hi and thanks Dallas, Yes it's very important to toss that brass jig away as soon as it looks a bit worn and make a new one. Make a few at a time. I bought a 1200mm length of the brass right angle (1.6mm thick) from Coffs Metal Mart. Think it was about the $40 mark. Col lives in Coffs, he might get his there also. I'm 40kms south of Coffs.
