Default review of 2007 -- a box year, a marquetry year

In the year 2007 I had my first time to try marquetry technique. It was also the first time I made small boxes.

This is the very first time I made a box with marquetry. Before this I only made some magazine racks. This mail box is made from red oak. It took me one week to finish the marquetry work. However I was pretty satisfied with the overall effect. Many people overpraised me when I first posted it, actually it was my first time try to make a marquetry. Now the mailbox is just outside my house.

Now I made two small boxes, both with simple marquetry. The square one I gave it to my daughter for her junks. The long one was used to hold my precious knife.

Then I tried my first time to make a jewelery box. Again I used red oak, which was proofed later not so suitable for the jewelery box. I also used bird eye maple. The marquetry was a duplicate of Diane Edwards' Algonquin Pine.

With some more experience, I started to try more boxes. The natural marble-like pattern of poplar is very attractive and the wood itself is use-friendly. I used poplar for another two boxes:

Another medicine cabinet with marquetry and inlay work.

Next year I am planning to make more complicated boxes, with more exquisite marquetry work. I will also add marquetry to some small furnitures. If I have time I will post the WIP threads with the working procedure of my marquetry works. After several projects I really accumulated some experience and tricks. It is really really cold in winter in Canada and my workshop is in my garage. I will hide inside the house until the spring comes back. Wish you all Merry Christmas and happy new year!

Oooooo, Yum! My favourite is the Butterfly and Bamboo box. the little squares of colour are so in keeping with the Japanese feel of the box. Superb!!!

Fantastic work! I really want to learn to do that. Your fine work has given me incentive.
