Thanks Dallas. I planned to use my Gifkins Dovetail jig but the boards I used were a few mm too thick for the Gifkins template I have. I didn’t have a choice other than to put in the hours doing them by hand.

Glue up done, panels engraved and drawers made. Just need to add the false fronts, cut the lid, apply some finish and fit the hardware.

I even managed to do some home brewing[emoji3]

    Looking really good, Jacques.

Is that an Ian Hawthorne lock set and hinges? If so, how do they compare to the smartHinge? Are you planning an escutcheon?

What will you do on the inside of the top? A fabric finish? Mirror?

Love your book press by the way. A bit more elegant than mine (but I love mine anyway

What kind of finish do you have in mind?

    Best regards,

    Brian

Thanks Brian. Yes, it’s Ian’s hinges and lock. I was going to use the bigger hinges but decided to use the smaller ones instead since it’s the same profile and size as the lock. If not used Andrew’s locks but if it’s anything close to these locks from Ian it won’t disappoint. Installation is super easy and the quality is top notch.

The drawers and lid is being lined with authentic leather suede, pretty fancy stuff which smells even fancier. I might leave the inside top lid exposed for a mirror, depends on what the recipient’s parents decide they want to do.

The box will be finished with Osmo Polyx satin oil.

Any thoughts out there about those vintage handles on the side, for some reason they don’t speak to me. I reckon it needs something more feminine?

Here is a full photo of my book press, before and after the restoration. The only reason I have one is because you mentioned that you use one when making veneered box lids (back in the days when you were still making boxes [emoji3])

Handsome restoration of the book press, Jacques - a really lovely job. Congratulations.

Cheeky sod I’m still making boxes. Here are a couple of WIP pics - I’m currently writing a WIP report for the Madrone box:

but recently I’ve been churning out small boxes and toys for the local Neighbourhood Centre which does a lot of good work for adults with Downs Syndrome and other challenges:

This little chap and his mates have also been getting in the way:

Interesting to hear your view on the Neat hinge/lock. I still have quite a stock of Andrew’s stuff but I see that Ian’s hinges are $A13 less per pair than Andrew’s. Both expensive but the saving is not to be sneezed at. Looks like I’ll be following your lead next time!

Suede sounds good for the box lining. Definitely a touch of class! The PolyX should make it look a cracker.

Handles? My preference would be for something that lies flatter to the sides and doesn’t distract the eye from the lines of the box itself. You might pick up some ideas from Cabinet Hardware Furniture Fittings Fulhambrassonline.com– FulhamBrassOnline

looking forward to seeing the finished article, Jacques.

    Keep well,

    Brian

I always enjoys your WiP posts Brian. Keep them coming.

Are those boxes pinned hinges or made with the Rob Cosman hidden hinge method?

I tend to agree with the handles, I need to get something else.

I used the 5mm barrel hinges for the boxes - fixed in with thick CA glue. Somehow I had the idea that these were difficult to install - in fact I found them a doddle. Fitted 15 pairs in an hour. Just needed to drill the holes acccurately. For around $3 a pair it was difficult to go past. Rob Cosman’s hinge is neat but way too time onsuming unless you’re making a special box - then I’d use the type of hinge you’ve used here!

    Keep well,

    Brian

Really lovely piece, Jacques. What finish did you use?

I noticed what look like a couple of scratches on the lock selvedge. It may just be the photo, but if not I can recommend using Micromesh to bring back the polish.

I’m sure the recipient will be thrilled with this - congratulations!

    Regards,

    Brian

Well worth the time and effort Jacques. Just wondering how you constructed the lining on the vertical sides?
You may have said earlier, but to save me looking back through the thread what are the overall dimensions of the chest?
