Roll Tops
I'm about to make a few knitting needle boxes for Christmas gifts but I haven't yet decided on the lid design. Does anybody know how to make those roll top lids you sometimes see on pencil cases. They look simple but I bet their not. What do you use for the backing for the slats?
Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know about pen boxes, but the old time rolltop desks used canvas.
Probably want something more flexible. Ripstock nylon possibly, if you can get an adhesive that works well with it."If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite."

Roll top lids on pencil cases Any pictures?
I intend on using calico glued and stapled to back my tambor door. The door will have 71 slats, will end up being about 1.3 m high by 45 mm wide. It will be very interesting to see if it works.
cheers

Sheesh!! They would have to be very thin slats to get around such a tight corner!! but very impressive!
Thanks Dan

Use duck (basically a slightly heavier calico) with the slats glued on using PVA. The important things are to have the slat sides all parallel, the slats all at right angles to the direction of travel and the tracks identical - make a routing template. When gluing the slats to the backing, put wax on the edges so they don't stick to each other.
I'll bring the pencil case up next time so you can have a look at the innards.
