    Default Rose Box

    Started this last December, and have finally finished it. Haven't worked at it continuously, as there have been many times when I got frustrated trying to master some stage, that I left it alone for a long period because I was running out of hair. However, with some help from the forum, I persisted and managed to get to the next stage each time. It's been a huge learning curve, but I think the next one will be much easier.

    The carcass is made from 12mm mdf, with the marquetry work glued on. Trims, and tray, are made from Tassie oak. The top is finished with Ubeaut hard shellac. Had a disaster when the top had been veneered, but no finish applied. Had a major leak in the shed, during a storm, and the top filled with water. The short story is that the mdf swelled all over the place, and the top veneer had to be repaired in quite a few areas.

    The box is approximately 280mm x 215mm x 140mm high, and is pretty much straight from ‘The Marquetry Course’ by Metcalfe and Apps. If anyone is interested in applied marquetry, then I highly recommend this book to them.

    The water damage has prevented this from being as good as I would have liked. But all the same, I am very happy, and my daughter loves it.

    Chris thats an impressive work. shame about the leak. Maybe thats something you could use the Bunnies vouchers on Celastac so you can fix the leak.

    Thanks joez, I did take some photos at various times, but not enough for an inteligent wip. I just started another one as a regular octogon, and I'll do a wip on that.

    What I learned is that I can't cut mitres to save my life, but that a shooting board does them for me easily once it was setup. I just made the carcass of the next box in 2 hours. Which is a fraction of what it took for the first one.

    Hmm. The roof is already fixed, but I'm sure I'll find a use for the vouchers.
