Old Rosewood Burl in lid insert
Hi All, Just finished this box today and would like to share it with you. The box is made entirely from rosewood, and the lid insert is a slice of a rosewood burl. I love the appearance.
The wax finish over my danish oil, (which I make both myself now), has come up beautiful on this rosewood,
Paul

That is very rich looking. Like it needs a row of very expensive cigars in it. Very nice work.

Thanks Gentlemen, I've really taken a liking to rosewood lately myself also. Initially I got some from a builder who was renovating a very old house and pulling the old window frames out of it, all rosewood. Then some weeks ago I tripped down to Boutique Timbers and got some more there also. That's where the rosewood burl come from, I've still got a bit of that slice left and will do a larger box shortly with it, same thing, lid insert etc.

Hi Paul,
That really is a classy looking box. I have incorporated rosewood into boxes with other timber before but have never made one entirely out of rosewood before. Strangely enough I had been thinking about doing a series of boxes from just rosewood since just before christmas and had contemplated designs very similar to that box you did in shape and size at least. I had other ideas on hinges and handles but I can see from what you have done that I am on the right track and what I have been thinking about will look alright. Very nice burl in the lid insert. Probably a bit nicer than the rosewood burl I have. I tend to plan well in advance but it is great to see how nice yours turned out. I just hope the ones I make are as nice when I get to them.
Cheers

Thanks Doug, very kind remarks.
I mentioned previously that I went down to Boutique Timbers recently. I must say the service there is excellent. Greg down there does not stop, he goes flat out all day. They have 1800 acres in from Telegraph Point, and I have never seen so much timber in my life. There are paddocks full of slabs of timber all over the place, each pack neatly stacked with spaces in between for seasoning purposes obviously. I don't know how they have time to tend to all the cows I seen on the property. They have this very old bandsaw, it's a monster. The blade would be about6 inches wide, the total circumference I have no idea, it's a horizontal bandsaw. There are railway tracks that start beyond and go under the blade in the bandsaw. There are about 3 or 4 rail carriages like bogies where the timber is clamped on to. They put just about a full tree on this. A large cog partly underground drives the carriages along as the blade cuts through the timber. With depth adjustments down to 5mm, amazing.
Excellent service and a real eye opener

Hi all,
I still have a bit more of that same rosewood burl left over, so decided to make another box. This one is a bit larger than the other.
Just wanted to share with you,
Paul

Just a Thought
Lovely workmanship and choice of wood! I recently saw some photos of a piece of burl in which there were voids which had been filled in with a clear epoxy. It certainly looked good without the dust-collecting voids, and it's something that I believe that I will try.

Interesting comment there "boxed in", I'd have to see a photo of it to see what I really thought of that concept. Yes I guess it is a bit of a dust collection hole, when I was waxing it I cleaned the wax out of the burl holes with an old tooth brush.
But I think the very rustic appearance of the old burls outweighs a bit of dust.
Regards, Paul
