Thread: Sassafras Veneered Valet Box

I posted a photo recently in another thread of this box and now it is finished i thought it deserved a better showing. This is an example of single sided veneering with the timber being New Guinea Rosewood and the veneer being .6 Black Heart. I purchased a bundle of this veneer a few years ago and i was amazed that every sheet is exactly the same, i can choose random sheets from the pack and they match.

With the veneer being so thin there is no room for the slightest mistake, the veneering process has to be very clean and any cuts must be scribed to avoid tear out and the book matching of the lid must be perfect as there is no room for sanding down a raised edge.

The watch pillows are my custom made items, clad in leather with matching Sassafras end caps.

The box is finished to a silky smooth satin finish with 2 coats of Constantia Organic Finishes Chinese Wood Oil followed by a single application of Lincoln Wax.
