    Question SCMS v's Table Saw

    OK you box makers!
I thought I might try my hand at making the occasional box and thought about cutting out the pieces. The table saw I have is ridiculously sub-standard, the fence won't lock properly and bearings need replacing, it is perhaps past its use by date.

So I thought about replacing it with ???? either a SCMS or another Table Saw. Resources will not stretch to both.

What do you box makers consider would be more useful of the two types of machines, leaving out makes and models

I mention that I already have a 14" bandsaw for breaking down woodturning blanks.

I took Roger Gifkins' advice at one of his box making seminars and bought a good SCMS. (See also http://www.gifkins.com.au/Custom%20Fence.pdf )

It is by far my most valuable tool. A good one will be very accurate.

For box sized stock, you can even rip on it for many, if not most, box sizes.

I still find it useful to have a table saw but my "table saw" is just a Mark 3 Triton and the combination of it and the Makita 12" SCMS does everything that I need.

I would have to agree with what charleville said i have a 10" bosh tradesman SCMS and the triton 2000 saw combined with the bandsaw and a router I think you have every thing you need for making great boxes

For what it's worth, both are good at doing individual things well but if I had to choose just one for versatility I would suggest a saw table with a swinging arbor, if the budget go as far as a 12" one rather than a 10" go the extra size because you never know what you may want to do in the future.

I have found a new use for a 12" blade which I had not considered 12 months ago.

    Cheers

    Thanks Guys for your thoughts!

Can you suggest if a 10 " x 40 tooth blade or something finer would be more suitable?

If you want a good finish then get more teeth, I use a 80 tooth x 250mm on the SCMS and a 110 tooth on my 12" table saw.

I find I can glue up straight off the blade with no extra planning or cleaning up required for either the miters or other joints.

    Cheers

Thanks Steve! I will definitely be buying an 80T blade and have also decided to keep my old table saw going and purchasing a new SCMS.

I appreciate all the advice given.
