    Default Scrap Plywood Box

I have some scrap off cuts from the 9mm CD ply that I used to line my shed a couple of years back and was looking as to what I could do with them.

I’ve been looking at some of the great looking work on the box making thread and thought I might give that a go. My expectations of replicating the standard of work and finishes produced there weren’t high using CD ply and lacking some of the machines to achieve accuracy and finish. So I set about making a basic utility box with no particular use in mind as far as possible only using hand tools to improve hand tool skills.

I did cut the ply to width using a jigsaw with a make shift fence, then cut to length using a tenon saw and mitred the corners with a dovetail saw. After gluing up, sawed the lid off with the dovetail saw. The cedar splines were donated by SWMBO and some potential cupboard moths. I gave it three coats of water based clear varnish and fitted brass hinges and clasp sourced from the big green shed.

It’s not perfect but for a first attempt at a box I’m fairly happy with the result and the lessons learnt along the way.

Nice result for a simple box, especially the hand cut mitre corners. I reckon it's a ripper. My only concern is how secure the hinge screws will be.

Is that because I’m screwing into the ply layers? They did screw down firmly without stripping.

That looks like a pretty neat outcome you have achieved. Hopefully you will find a good use for it in time so that all your hard work doesn't go to waste.

That's my concern. Maybe they can be firmed up with CA glue. May be worth a try.

Thanks, it didn't take long for SWMBO to find a use for it and happily, for me it's not hard work when I enjoy what I'm doing in the shed.
