Sea Chest MkII
My Father in law turned 80 this year and having served with the RN during WW2 I decided to make him a Sea Chest to store his navy papers in. The chest is constructed of Fijan Cedar and around the plinth (correct term?) I have had the names of all of the ships that he served in cut in by a laser. They go around the entire base. If you know something about the RN you will note that most of them were submarines, P before the number, I didn't before I started the project.
It was originally meant to have handles in the shape of torpedoes but i couldn't find a supplier of brass propellers of the correct size, so I copped out and bought the brass handles shown.
The inlayed mother of pearl escutcheon plate was hand cut.
My biggest failure was the gap in the lid and this was caused by forcing the staves of the lid to take shape after an earlier error. This tension in the lid caused the gap on the right hand side once the box was cut open on the table saw. I learnt a valuable lesson here.
Anyway he loves it so I am number one son in law (for now).

That is truly magnificient Bob. What a wonderful idea and so well executed. Hardly surprising that the FIL likes it.

Nice looking box.
Something I've always wanted to know is why sea chests always have the domed lid?Pugwash.
Never criticise Australia Post. One day they might find out where you live.
