Cool Shou-Sugi Ban, burnt Douglas Fir box

    Hi,

I wanted to make a very rustic box. The Japanese technique of scorching the pine to use the natural oil in the wood to seal & protect itself. also darkens & produces texture.

I used to have some candle holders from the mid 1970's done the same way but I can not find them, in a box somewhere maybe.

The Silky Oak makes a nice contrasting timber in the lid. Note the Douglas Fir was a salvaged board full of nail holes.

    Cheers RGP.

Nice result, looks like you've got it just right.
The technique was very big in the 1970s. I wish I'd thought of using it for a box I've just completed, that has a WRC lid panel. The recipient (client's wife) is Japanese, she might have liked it.
