Thread: Siberian Elm Box

Interesting thing about the wood for this box. A friend of my daughters parents found out I made boxes. The told me they had a tree cut down a couple of years ago and asked me if I would like some. I told them I would. I saw they had a couple of 2', 8-10" dia. logs in the yard and thought that was what they wee giving me. Turns out that when the tree was cut down, they had the tree service cut it into a few slabs with the chainsaw. What they gave me was 3 slabs. They were 3-4" thick and approx. 3'x7'. :0 Their daughter told mine she would like a box sometime and this was relayed to me. I made this for my daughter to give her for her bithday.
This box is made from Siberian Elm. The dimensions are 6"x4"x2 1/2". It is finished with multiple coats of drying oil wet sanded in, French polished with shellac, and buffed with a coat of Canuba wax. Hinges are made by Brusso and are self stopping at 95*. The liner is a synthetic suede and will not tarnish silver.
