My silky oak box presents
I made the following boxes for my niece's recent wedding. The sides are 12mm thick nicely figured silky oak, and the lid is American Cherry timber. Each box has an oval shaped brass plate engraved to commemorate the occasion.
The boxes measure 260W x 160D x 120 H, and were a big success. They were made using the Gifkins dovetail jig, thanks to Col Hosie for helping out with advice on how to make the pins wider where the lid is cut off the box.
The hinges are the SmartHinges, and I must admit to having a bit of trouble with the reverse (climb) cut on the router table - the box did come away from the fence slightly, so the lid does not sit exactly squarely on the box

Many thanks for your kind comments. The couple particularly like the engraved plate.
Forgot to mention that the tray is made of 5 mm thick koto (West Aftrican Ash), with a 4 mm plywood base recessed into the sides. That was tricky, especially as the corners were dovetail joints.
Found that you can buy the adhesive backed red felt lining ( or blue or green etc) at Spotlight in metre wide rolls, or in A4 size sheets. Tried several ways to cut this to exact shape, including a guillotine, but the best way for me was to stick it to the unprinted side of a breakfast cereal box, draw the exact outline required on the cardboard, and cut using a steel ruler and a Stanley knife with a new sharp blade. Then fit the cardboard into the box with the felt face up. I like it when the cushion of air under the tight fitting cardboard is expelled
I haven't come up with a neat way of putting felt on the sides yet.
