Silky Oak Box
This box has a Celtic Knot Inlay in the lid and is made from Silky Oak. The shape creates an Art Deco style that is simple to make with basic butt joints.
The main body is made using 5mm Dominos in the front/back/inner sides assembly. The box was bandsawn to shape and then finally sanded to shape. The box has three coats of OSMO oil and has been lined using a blue suede leather.
The box measures 200mm wide x 140mm x 80mm high.

Always thinking outside of the square and another very well executed box. I hope that I can retain or enhance my skills as I get older as well as you have done.

Nice work Ian. What is the inlay in the Celtic Knot? That 'blue' (looks very purple on my computer screen) suede is stunning. Very classy.

Hi Aldav
I created the digital file for the Celtic Knot in Lightburn which is a program for laser engravers. The laser engraving was carried out while the lid was still flat and was engraved about 5 mm to 6 mm deep. The Celtic Knot was then filled with a two part resin that was tinted opaque black.
One of things I learnt was that the resin will wick into the grain ( silky oak is very coarse grain) and this was a problem when sanding. Because I had plenty of depth of the inlay I was able to remove more material to reduce the issue. Another lesson learned.Next time I will use a sealer before the resin fill. And my head I'd be a scratchin'
