    Default Silky Oak and Walnut

Recently made a jewellery box out of scrap silky oak and walnut for a wedding present.

The stock was predominantly prepared by hand using a No. 4, which was the most time consuming part of the build.

Dovetails were cut, aided by blue tape for visibility (Derek's trick).

    Dry fitting.

I decided to have a go at inlaying, to give it a bit of personalisation. Unfortunately I wasn't careful enough and broke the 'remain' part of the inlay. Hence, I ended up rebating a rectangular shape and filling up the necessary gaps with small pieces of wood. The downside is that the grain continuity is no longer maintained.

The original plan was to have a hinged lid, however, I could not find screws short enough for the thickness of the lid.
Finished with shellac and ubeaut wax.

I'm quite happy with how it turned out. The best part of box making is that very little material is needed! And once the stock is prepared, it's quite addictive...

    Cheers,
    Andy

Thanks Jim and verawood. The lid is just under 9 mm.

Nice use of scrap - doesn't look scrappy at all.
