    Default Silver Ash Document Box

I recently helped out a local cabinet/furniture maker with a box he was making for his daughter and he said he had some nice Silver Ash boards that the borers had got to and he could not use, said it would be ideal for box making. I took a small piece home and dressed it up revealing some beautiful chatoyance so i went back and grabbed a few lengths.
My sisters 50th wedding anniversary is approaching so a box was in order. i machined much more than i needed so i could remove borer remnants and soon realised the timber was super stable and i could resaw a 5mm slice that would stay straight so decided to make the box and tray base with the Ash so there was no need for lining.
The story behind the Ash is that it was milled 40 odd years ago just before the forest became a world heritage area.

That is some very special silver ash! Boards like that don't come our way very often & are very tempting to set aside for "that special project." Well this is one of them methinks - a 50th for some one near & dear. Awesome.

ps not a criticism, more an observation & suggestion, as the QSA ages it typically yellows somewhat so may lose some of the impact of an "all white" box, so some small detailing, say a border of contrasting stringing, or even splines may help counter that ageing process and maintaining that wonderful visual impact.

Amazing silver ash,my favourite light timber.
I think sunlight darkens it so the interior should keep its colour ok.
Being unadorned on the exterior you could give it a refinish every 5 years or so.
I did a large crazy sculptural piece years back in Huon and after ten years the customer paid me about the same as the original cost to refinish it.
