    Default A simple box

This is a simple box i made for a friend to give their Daughter for Christmas. it apparently takes pride of place, in an otherwise untidy room. It is made from Tassie Oak, with a Silky oak top insert, surounded by Sydney Bluegum, which is also used on the feet. Finish is Danish oil. the black felt is glued to thin cardboard. Dovetails are via Gifkins jig
    Thanks Kev.

Again lovely work Cagey, very elegant. What hinges did you use and how are they fitted. Picture of the back of the box would be good. I like the lid stays, if thats what they are called, where you get them from?

Excellent... simple but extravagant looking! Your timber choices are great. Real classy box.

Really nice work. I like the hinges you used. Never tried this kind of hinges. Do you route the groove for the hinges in the side wall with a router or is it done with a chisel?

The hinges are interesting as they incorporate the stay. I have now made a jig to use a hand held router with template guides, but this one was done on the router table with stop blocks etc. the hinges will only work with a high sided lid, as they need a cavity for the stay to run into on both sides. I picked these up from Timbecon here in Oz . They are called 'hinge and stay set', but are a little pricey, so only on special projects. I sometimes use Quadrant hinges from Bunnings harware chain which are cheaper, and look ok, but not quite as classy.
    Thanks Kev.

Now that is one very beautiful box!!!! I love the shape, but most of all, the effect of the timber when you open the lid is just such an unexpected WOW!!!!
