My First - a simple small storage box
I've made a few carved, routed and bandsawn boxes, but had never made a 'standard' box before, with mitred corners and panelled top and bottom, so thought it was time I gave it a go.
This is just a simple box to store a couple of my guitar accessories, for practice before having a shot at a real jewellery box. It's made from pallet Pine with a Camphor Laurel top and lined with felt. The Camphor Laurel top panel is an offcut from my guitar soundboard, so it matches the guitar.
The size is 230mm x 140mm x 62mm tall. I finished it with 3 coats of Danish Oil to bring out the grain, followed by 3 coats of wipe-on poly for protection and low maintenance. I used 'Smart' hinges for the lid, so I didn't have to mess around hand-cutting mortices. I'll save that for the next one. This one was a good learning exercise.

I'll start a WIP thread on my jewellery box build when I get myself organised. It will be Merbau, with a figured Camphor Laurel top panel and plain Camphor Laurel tray. (The sides are in the background of the pics.)... Steve

Great effort, you should have entered it in the pallet challenge.

Thanks for the good feedback, guys. I've been wanting to have a go at these boxes for a while, but was unsure if my CMS was up to clean, accurate 45 degree mitres. Seems it is. (It's just a cheap GMC 8 1/4" with an equally cheap but new 60T blade.)
You've given me added motivation to fire up on the next one.
I would have liked to, but the Camphor Laurel top would have ruled me out. I could have made a pallet pine top panel instead, but then it would have looked boring. The Camphor Laurel is the only good thing about it.... Steve

A great start to box making. You have got all the proportions right in my opinion.
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.

Thanks Ruddy. The proportions on this one were a fluke - I just made it to fit the contents and the side/length ratio turned out at almost exactly the 'Golden Ratio' of 1.62.
The next one will purposely be made to the golden ratio - 230 x 142 x 88. I really think it makes a box more pleasing to the eye if the proportions are correct.... Steve
