Default Slotted stainless steel 3G screws for hinges

    Hi All,
I've been following Ian Hawthorne's videos. He said he was using 2.5mm x 16mm slotted head stainless steel screws on his box. I assume these are actually 3G x ⅝" I haven't been able to source them. Ian polishes the heads of his screws by spinning them in a drill press against 400 grit sandpaper. I'd like to do the same, so chrome plated steel or brass screws won't work.

Does anyone know where I might get them in Oz? I don't want to wait forever for OS postage. Although if OS is the only option I'll wait.

    Cheers,
    Chris

Thanks for those leads. Mr Stainless has a M2.5x16 screw with a cross head. There are no pictures so I assume that's a Phillips head. I suspect it's also a machine screw not a wood screw. Annoyingly they don't have a phone number to call.

I found 4G x 16 screws in Melbourne. Unfortunately it's a Phillips head and 4G is getting a bit big. The diameter of the head is almost the width of the hinge. I suppose I could turn the heads down a fraction on my lathe. But I really prefer the look of slotted heads, so I'll keep searching.

Given the number of views of this thread with only one reply, is it safe to assume almost everyone here uses brass screws on their boxes?

Not necessarily, i just use the screws that come with the hinges. I believe there was a good reason philips head screws were designed and have become the norm and for good or bad i'm not purist enough to think that fixing box hinges with anything but slotted screws is sacrilege.

Fair enough, but my question related to material the screws were made of, not the type of head.

Rightly or wrongly I tend to associate Phillips head screws with electrical equipment and slotted head screws with woodwork. Particularly when it comes to cabinetry and box making.

Cabinet Makers stopped using slotted head screws 45 years ago.

Is that right? Certainly those that make kitchen cabinets out of melamine MDF. I've used hundreds of Philips head screws myself on such cabinets. But what about bespoke cabinet makers? Who's using all the slotted head wood screws that are being sold? Brass, bare steel, zinc plated steel, chrome plated steel, stainless steel - all available in a huge range of sizes.

Interesting point Jack, i would also like to know. I remember ........ vaguely during my apprenticeship i used to refurb old doors and joinery and the slotted head screws (usually always Brass) were as soft as chewing gum and never a good fit for blade screw drivers we used. I was always at the grinder reshaping a screw driver to get that perfect fit to remove a screw.

Another place you could try is Metro Bolts, Richmond, Victoria. They have a pretty wide range of nit, screws, washers and bolts (as the old joke goes.)

Thanks, they look good! I'll give them a call on Monday. Hopefully their business survives stage 4 lockdown.

    Jack,

The screws I’ve had from Ian H with his hinges in the past have been machine screws not wood screws.

+1 for Metro Bolts in Swan Street Richmond Vic.

For fine boxes, where the hinges are very noticeable and arguably part of the presentation I still like slot headed screws, clocked so they point in the same direction. Everything else I use Philips head or (preferably) Robertsons.

    Regards,

    Brian

Many top of the range Furniture where screws are used, use Philips, Pozi drive or similar, slot headed screws are only used in antique repair, or by those who for some unknown reason believe they are "classier"
Back in the day if they had alternatives slotted screws would never have been used. Henry Phillips is a hero

Anyone who uses Pozi drive screws on top of the range furniture ought to be shot. There must be a HUGE number of people who are either doing antique furniture repair or are fussy about their screws, given the enormous range of slotted head screws on the market.
