    Default Spalted Poinciana document box

Experimented with spalting some pretty bland yellow Poinciana about 12 months ago by wrapping a fairly wet piece ( 600x200x40mm) in cling wrap taping it up and leaving it for about 8 months the result was interesting enough to turn into a document box with highlights of Soloman Island Ebony. It remained remarkably stable and wasn't to bad to work using dust mask etc. C&C welcome.P1010377.jpgP1010379.jpg

Nice work. I've seen a few ways of spalting tried, but this is the first one that worked!

What an unusual looking timber. Looks fantastic though.

Thanks for all the positive comments. I Was just lucky that it all came together as there was no predetermined plan. The moister content and timing must have been just right as the spalting penetrated the whole sawn section without any soft spots. I must say that I am not a real fan of the effect but I was encouraged to use it by my chief critic! !!!

    Thumbs up

    Great result!!!

Poinciana can be problematic so I'm pleased to see you wore a dust mask!

You had a point of good fortune with the spalting. My experience eith Poinciana is
That once it starts it doesn't take long before you have a pile of spongy muck!

I must say this is very impressive! How long did it take you to complete?

Difficult to answer as it was done as WIP as part of a box making workshop that I facilitate at club level and each stage is part of the lesson plan. If a participant is not an approved operator on either the compound sliding mitre saw, router table or table saw they are given specific training and guidance for each operation.
This is normally the first part of each 2.5 hour workshop over a 4 day period. The end result is a completed box usually with a tray insert for the 4 participants.
So not taking into account the slabbing of the original log, spalting ,drying then milling to finished sectional sizes I allow about 15 minutes during each session to demonstrate each operation and then put the finishing touches at home......I don't time the whole process as it is part of the pleasure of my woodworking hobby. Cheers Kerry
