    Default Special jewelry box

I have been working on this for a little while and now happy with the end result. It comes from a plan that was created by Roger Gifkin of Gifkins Dovetail some time ago and even though it says jewelry box, it is very large at 350 x 250 x 100.
Made from a rustic piece of Messmate with Red Cedar liners inside. The panel in the lid is Blackwood. I didn't take Roger's advice and made the tray a neat fit, so now it is a piston fit and you need to remove it slowly so the whole box doesn't lift with it. The action does look good when putting it back in though.

Hey Dallas, wow, I am impressed mate !, well done. Lovely box all joints look super, nice little spline you put in your tray also. Who will be the lucky recipient of this box.

I have the DVD that Roger put out on the making of this box, was one of the first things I bought when I first bought my Gifkin outfit I think end of 2012. A lot of very handy hints in that DVD, cept now Col has pretty much covered them all and more in his weekly shows.

    Great work.

We are lucky as they are fairly common woods for around here.

No one in mind for the box, just wanted to have a go at making it. Because of the size of it I don't really want to have it around too long. We hopefully will have our wood club exhibition later in the year and maybe might be able to move it on there.
Your mention of the DVD got me thinking that I possibly had one of those too, and sure enough when I checked the collection it was there. I think I picked it up at one of Col's demo's at the wood show a few years back.
Thanks for the reminder I watch so many things on Youtube that I sometimes I forget what I have tucked away.

    Hi Dallas,

Lovely work - definitely one to be proud of! The blackwood complements the messmate beautifully. What finish did you use?

    Best regards,

Thanks Brian. I used Organoil Danish Oil on this one. I haven't applied any wax yet but will do so after it has had a week to dry. I would liked to have used some Constantia Wood Oil or Red Oil but I didn't have enough to do such a large piece.

Very nice box, can I ask - how have you fitted those stays?

I am assuming you are wanting to know how the stays are fitted between the box and the lining strips. The stays are fitted in the normal way with the pivot screw in the lid frame and the other screw into the box allowing the stay to slide. A rebate is routered out of the back of the lining strip about 1mm deep and the width dimensions suit the stay movement. A hole slightly larger than the screw head also needs to be drilled a couple of mm deep into the rebate to allow the head of the screw to fit into it so the lining will still sit flush against the side of the box.
To determine the width of the rebate remove the pivot screw and move the stay through its travel as if the box was open then closed by measuring where the pivot screw would be in these 2 positions.

    Hi Dallas,
why do you need wax on top of the danish oil and what type of wax will you be using? It looks glossy and luxurious from the picture as is, great job and hope you enjoying your retirement!

    Hi Trevor,
Good to hear from you. The reason for the wax is just to add another layer of protection to the oil. I fear that just the oil alone would attract finger prints and dirt which would degrade the finish. I am not after more gloss on the surface as the current natural look suits me but the wax gives it a silky smooth feel. My theory may be wrong here so if anyone has other ideas let me know.
    Retirement is great
