    Default Spoon Display Box

    Hey There,

I was asked if I could make a box to display some spoons that a Lady in Derby made about 30 years ago, I thought that I should give it a go, A big learning curve, I will do better if I get a chance to do it again. Made from Jarrah with Brass fittings, mitre joins in the corners and glued, I should have done Dove tails or box joins, but that will be the next project. The spoons are hand made and there is a difference of about 2.5 to 3mm at the area where they are mounted, this was interesting, I checked one at his shop (The smallest one)and all was good. When I took the box over this morning 1 spoon fitted and 5 didn't, about half an hour with the rotary tool and Now ALL is Good.
The spoons need a polish and they're off to Derby. They do sit neat and fairly straight.

Nothing wrong with mitre joints when they are done as tight as yours! That's a fine looking box and suits the purpose just fine. What did you finish the box with?

Your mitres look good to me. Not much depth in that casing or lid to get a lot of dovetails or finger joints in. So maybe mitres are the best. If you worry about strength of the lid, maybe thin splines across the corners would be a way to go. Your books shows off the spoons very nicely.

Very well done, As mentioned the box is shallow and the mitre joint looks good. You could also try a splined mitre joint on your next one. Would add to the attraction and make the joint that much stronger. You have installed the hinges and lock perfectly and they look great. Really nice work, Congratulations.
    Reality is no background music.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for the comments, I appreciate your input.

Hey Cisco the finish is 'Spray Resin' a very interesting find, a few coats of this stuff and you have a beautiful lustre and deep looking hard finish.

    BTW the customer is rapt,
