Spotted Gum Box
Below are some piccies of a spotted gum/ river red gum box. Dovetails made with the Gifkins jig. ( Went up a size in the dovetails). Thickness is 13mm but used the A 10 template so that were less dovetails -not so busy.)
The box was made to specifications and has a base and an overlapping lid. I don't usually do that but I'm quite happy with the result. The veneered panels are quilted maple. (thanks to Martrix for coming to the rescue).
Box measures: 180m X 145mm and is 110mm high including lid.
Finished in two coats of Danish oil, lightly sanded and buffed.
I really hope the new owner is happy with the job.

Nice work CP. It's hard on the planer blades that Spotty, but nice timber.

The woods are very pretty and a nice box. What's the new owner going to use it for?
Always interested in what people put in their boxes.

Good job CP. Also a good move with going for less dovetails, like you said it may have gotten too busy.
The pic is not 100% clear, but it looks like the veneer might be the Birdseye Maple?I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Yes, it's a beautiful timber, but it's not Red River Gum, its River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis).
It is a durable, medium to large hardwood, grown in plantations in Egypt, South Africa, Spain, Israel, and Portugal.
In Australia, it is found along many of our inland rivers. Its durability and workability makes it extremely versatile, although it is often only used as a pulp source. In Egypt, where it is converted to particleboard, it is useful for its bank stabilisation/erosion-control properties, as well as its ability to survive while inundated by flood waters. Since the 1880s, red gums have helped to eradicate malarial swamps in Israel, reforest barren areas denuded by the firewood-hungry Ottoman Empire, and supply timber, shade and protection from marauding Arab armies. Also suitable for turnery, flooring, furniture, panelling, etc.

And the biggest problem with River red Gum is its colour. You only have to look at it and SWMBO says "You've been making boxes again!" The dust is VERY tell tale.
Thanks for the comments guys (and gal).
If Martrix says its birds eye maple veneer.... that's what it is!

Very nice Carry Pine - I like the figure in the bit of Spotty. Nice contrast with the River Red. What method did you use to connect base to sides? Great Job

Once again thanks Carry Pine, a lovely job. Just came out of yet another hospital stint and was waiting for me.
The box will be given to my new grand daughter/son, due on Christmas day (poor thing ).
I gave a handcarved wooden box that my father had made in the 30's to the first Grandson, filled with half of my modest accumulation of Australian coins. Should be lots of fun when he gets older
Best regards to all
Peter
