Storge box
Made this box yesterday to store my 246 precision blocks and protect them from damage.
Lid is radiata , sides are ,well I don't know just some slat timber I had recycled from an old aquarium stand.
Finished wit BLO and then shellac and carnuba wax.
Wondering if any one could ID the timber.
It's a softwood , bit harder than radiata , and fairly tight but porous grain .
It was rounded on both edges and around 55mm wide ,
I reckon it was slat or batten .
I'm thinking Meranti , but to me the colour is wrong .
Nice to work with though what ever it is.

Nice work Woodlee!
What are the precision blocks all about, BTW?

Thanks Artme ,
The blocks are used on a milling machine (metal work) for setting up work pieces They can be bolted to the table through the holes in them , some of the holes are threaded so they can be fixed together at 90deg you can use them like an angle plate.
Sort of like machinists Lego. You can also use them for checking squares against.
As the name suggests these measure 2" thick 4" wide and 6" long, they are hardened and precision ground to with in a few tenths of an inch. They also come in sizes like 1,2,3 ,and 3,4,5 .
Also seen them in metric dimensions.
I've just finished a smaller box for a pair of 123 blocks.
I saw a showed a local cabinet maker a piece of the timber yesterday , he reckons it Tassie oak , or Mountain ash or similar ,I asked about the colour , he said it also could be Messmate that has spent some time in the sun. That would be right the piece of furniture I recycled it from sat around the yard for a couple of years.

Nice looking work Kev, but you're right, that keyboard needs chucking out! It's definitely not writing what you are thinking, because your wooden box would be much better than
precision ground to with in a few tenths of an inch.
Perhaps a calibrated tap with a 2lb. hammer will fix the mongrel, but stick with it mate as I always enjoy your contributions, Best wishes,

Ah yes 10ths of thousand of an inch
Here's another box I made for my 123 blocks , with extra spaces for another pair .Box is made of radiata and finished with blo and wipe on poly .
I've put catches on both boxes now.

Ray,
Any thing is possible ,,,,,,,I think.
Do I need a box joint jig for the table saw? I've been using a jigged up contraption on my router table .
I lashed out and bought a Rockler box joint jig that was on special ,but haven't used it yet .
Glad it was on special though ,as I don't think it's worth the normal price they are asking.
