    Default Strange Silky Oak timber

I purchased this piece of Silky Oak at Melany wood show a few years ago (due to Covid no wood show for past 3 years). The imperfections appear to be bark fragments grown inside the tree. makes a very interesting box.

    Very nice indeed.

The timber reminds me of some Banksia I had quite a few years ago, which was in very narrow boards/slats. Sadly, not big enough for boxes, etc. and the inclusions made building up a piece look 'iffy.' But they made gorgeous trim decoration around a fancy dresser which I was quite happy with.

I've occasionally wondered at what conditions cause this type of feature, or whether it's just a feature of certain species?

Anyways, it came up looking a treat. Good choice on the simple form to show the features, too!
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

RGP, I think it's resin from insect damage, but as you have it and we can only see the picture I can't be positive. Good looking box all the same.
