    Cool Strange wood

    Hi all,

I was given a small plank from a wood place in Ulmarra.
I have turn't it into a small jewellery box. Does anyone have any idea what sort of wood it is? Maple? Light brown honey colour, no distinctive odour.

    Looks somewhat similar to Coachwood.

What did it smell like when you were working it?

Looks like coachwood, but that has a distinct caramel smell. Could be Xylocarpus (mangrove cedar) which is a PNG timber, and is actually neither mangrove nor cedar. Try paring across a bit of end grain. If it's easy, I'd guess MC.

Nice looking box, I like how you treated the base. Nice job.

    Default Coachwood

I finally got back in touch with the fellow who gave me the wood & it is coachwood. There was a very faint smell when I cut it down but I could not pick it.

    THANKS
