Default Suggestions for my first box

    Greetings all.

I'm a bit new to this woodworking caper and think in the nearish future I may try my hand at making a box. My big question though, is what would be the best style/technique for a beginner?

I was thinking about a shallow box to fit a few fountain pens in a tray and maybe a couple of ink bottles.

I don't want to try dovetails yet. I quite like the look of finger joints, but are mitred joins easier?

As for equipment at my disposal, I have a router (plus my newly constructed table), circ saw with a mitre box sort of jig, handsaws, clamps, etc. I can visit my Dad and use his triton and scms (and scrounge his off cuts for timber).

I'm also happy to be given an excuse to buy some new handtools, like planes and chisels.

Any suggestions (or even pictures of pen boxes for inspiration) would be appreciated.

    Hi PlanetJag,
    Welcome to the trade
Doesn't have to be dovetails, or mitred or ...or any particular style. The main thing is have a think about it. Try to picture what you want and then figure out a way of building it. When you come across something that is difficult try to solve the problem, or if you come to a dead end try to figure a different way of bypassing the difficulty. The main thing is to enjoy the process and take pride in achieving the best result you can with the tools at hand.

The minimum set of tools is probably a saw, some glue, and some sandpaper and from the sound of it you already have that. A router is the most versatile of tools and with a little ingenuity can be made to do a remarkably wide range of tasks. (For example a 45 degree chamfer bit can be used to cut mitred edges. A slot cutter in a router can also be used to produce slots for mitre keyed joins.
Sorry if this advice sounds too general to be useful. I would encourage you to start into it...and plenty of people here will be pleased to give you advice on specific problems as you strike them.
Post a pici of your first effort and show us what you come up with

    Hello PlanetJag,
I make all sort of boxes.. to suit a need.... your idea of a box for pens is good. I make jigs for the construction of my boxes which help keep them uniform.
