Default taking troubles away - or should i say deferring them

As you know I am in a little bit of strife with an angry piece of Huon pine cut on the angle, so what better way to help forget your troubles, make another box. This time the daughter wants one, so I thought I would make one similar to her mums but opposite.

see pic attached. Silver ash/African Wenge. so i thought i would do the opposing contrast, using Walnut and rock maple.

I really like the clean crisp look, Richard. It will be interesting to see a picture of this one and it’s “negative image” partner together. What are the dimensions of the boxes?

That's come up really well. Silver ash is one of my favourite timbers and that piece seems to have a bit of figure in it. It contrasts well with the wenge.

Here are the timbers, machines only, I thought I would give them a day or 4 to settle before cutting to size for glue up.

    2F73A2AD-0C55-4140-9A42-17E7C8150FEE.jpg

Finished size should be circa 260x155x90, as much as I’d like them to match, in contrast, but if the timber gods will allow me, I may make a tad bigger. The overall height won’t change but L and B may.

this one, as the silver ash is, will have a 12mm wall for barrel sloss hinges, and if I can get this bleeding website sorted I will be able to get chain to hold open.

my daughter wants a rainbow effect in the ring holder of the tray, Daiso had some packets of felt with colour variations that ran from pale pinks through to dark red and light blue to purple going through the shades so she wants me to use those, just incase the job isn’t difficult enough!!

anywY, I will attack the shop on Sunday with great gusto and should be able to have the basic box sized and inside sanded ready for glue up. Construction will be a rebate edge similar to the picture below, and then finished with the router to make the 4mm square recess uniform.

Attacked with great gusto today, sliced diced, trimmed and routed.

I didnt however cur enough maple edging so ill need to cut some more up to finish the uprights.

next I’ll sand the inside and rebates, tape it up and get gluing.

Glue up. you’ll see the piece covered in green tape in amongst all the clamps

    B0021E8B-051A-450F-87D2-54EADA925622.jpg 54A84FA8-6763-4DD8-BEF1-CC9D338A797A.jpg
That was the carcass with 24hrs glue up

and here’s the lid being glued on

More tape means less clean up!! it’s low tack, and at $1.15/roll I can afford to use a bit too much!! 10% the cost of Samurai green tape and even less than frog tape.

Got a a it further along yesterday, I trimmed all the Maple corners

    1E994DC1-4088-41F8-8522-B20934D3F64F.jpg

Then after work this morning, I glued in all said pieces, I saved you the pain of not having to see the sticky taped bundle. 6hours tapes and clamped should be sufficient for this and besides I’m not putting any stress on the joints.

then got out the trusty plane and hit the edges

    ED7D6AE7-2FEC-42CD-BEDA-1A60E6CDDB15.jpg

A quick sand with the ROS with 120grit,

I’m sufficiently happy with current result, now a few days rest, as much as I like the clean crisp corners, I maybe round them over as easier to handle and nothing to potentially catch and cause a tear out.

One more step, I rounded over the edges then ran through the table saw, completely through the front and back and just left 1mm at the ends to finish with the flush saw. Then cleaned up excess with a chisel (thanks Alex). A few strokes over the sanding board and she’s apples.

Quite happy with the result as it as it doesn’t look like it’s been cut. I then rough cut the trim over sizing so that I can fine tune and cut the mitres. Here’s a rough guide as to how it will look.

Next phase fine fitting of the lid and base lips.

Looking great Fumbler. I really like the colour contrast of the timbers, and how you've accentuated it with the trim. And the flowing grain on the lid is really nice.

What's the green tape you're using? Where did you get that from?

    Regards Adam

Thanks Adam, the tape is cheap $1.15 low tack tape from Bunnings, it’s apparently now a discontinued line so you have to be quick just in case it goes. I bought 10 rolls recently, and had to go to another store to find more. I find the blue tape can lift the grain at times so I prefer the green. And it’s a cheaper than Samurai tape, 10% the price.

Thanks Fumbler, I'll take a look on the weekend. That's a bargain.

Look forward to the next instalment on this box

so I haven't really got any further on this box, maybe a sand or 2 the hinge holes drilled, the tray made etc, and one for not wanting to complicate things, or not happy with just doing the 1 job, I felt I needed to raise the bar a tad by turning the Jewellery box into part of a beauty "set", not obviously a set means more than 1. so in goes, a hand mirror, hair brush and detangling comb still in the process. All out of American walnut and rock maple to stick with the theme.

Good to see it's still coming along.Making those accessories does take time, for me, more than I think.

Thanks TC, I seem to be doing everything possible to avoid the one thing that's frightening me and that's finishing the medal box with wooden hinges. I should just grow a pair and do it.

I even stepped up to the lathe and turned a fancy burl/resin cast screwdriver to take me away from the box whilst the beauty set was gluing up.
