    that is 'the' most beautiful piece of timber i've ever seen, and you have certainly done it justice.

    I keep coming back to this post as I am in awe of both the craftsmanship and the timber used.

    I am particularly impressed how the lid appears to meld into the sides grainwise. How did you manage it?

    Do you cut the lid material from the billet first then the sides or was it the chaotic pattern of the grain that allowed you to achieve this? Either way, it is exceptional!

    This was one of those billets that on rare occasions the pattern does not change through the thickness, eg you could have cut veneers from the whole block and they would all have been exactly the same.
    I cut the book matched lid pieces first and then the box material.
    With the book matched lid length being the sum of a long and short side i was then able to match, as best i could, the lid to the sides
