    Default Tasmanian Myrtle

Its been a while since i posted anything but its not to say i haven't been busy, i have, making stock for markets and on line stores as well as the endless flow of custom orders and thanks to this site i am able to lay my hands on some pretty special timbers like this Tasmanian Myrtle with its spectacular quilted grain and colour variation. As in all my designs, they are simple well made and i am always in pursuit of perfection in detail but the most important thing for me is to let the timber do the talking. The finish is HBO and Petes Polish.
This box has been purchased and will be going to Italy for a wedding present as soon as i have the details for the laser engraving.

Beautiful box. Good to see someone who appreciates all the natural features of some special timber.
Just a question on the lid, how is the top panel fitted so that natural movement is allowed for?

    That timber isn’t talking, it’s shouting ....

“look at me, look at me”

What are the details of the laser engraving?

Its a solid panel lid chamfered to within a mm of the top edge and a disclaimer in writing that goes out with every box so other than that i don't know, maybe i'm just lucky. How much movement should one expect to get from a book matched 200 x 180 x 9 piece?

I only ask because I always hear that you need to allow for the panel to move. I don't have enough experience to know if the fear is founded.

You can get an idea from punching numbers into the Shrinkulator
    The Shrinkulator – WoodBin

I don’t know what the numbers are for Myrtle, but using average numbers for walnut gives a total movement of about 1mm over 180mm. That’s for uncoated timber. Less if it is sealed. The calculator is worth playing with if you have time.

    Best regards,

    Brian

    Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.
