Tool chest
Here we go...
Making progress with the Gertsner style tool chest. I had some old white oak which I salvaged from an old cabinet which I'm using. Unfortunately as I was cutting it up after layout I realised that the boards were joined throughout the piece with splines. This meant I had to abandon the original idea I had to do dovetails and do rabbet joints instead. Anyway it will be fine as I plan to put the metal corner pieces on it (still have to source some from somewhere [emoji848]).
All the pieces except the drawer sides are millled up. Need to get some offcut boards for the drawer sides, make the drawers and do the timber runners before gluing it all up. Also need to source some decent hinges, a lock, figure out the brass pins for the front, some felt for the interior, the arbitrary little mirror and some handles. I think that's that for now [emoji16]. Oh yes, I might try and carve/engrave a brass plague for it on my x-carve, I'll see how it goes.
Will add some photos as I make progress.
Hope you enjoy.
Cheers

I assume it's a box so in the box section it goes. If this is the wrong section for it let me know please.
As for the timber, is that red or white oak? I have no idea.

Nice work. I hope it's going to be stationary cause it looks like it'll be heavy.

Progress for today, I worked on finishing the drawers, well almost as I still have to do the runners. I found some leftover pine so this is what I used [emoji4].
All the drawers are milled up, sized, joints cut etc. I used a traditional half blind lock joint for the drawer fronts. Since the drawers are quite small this should be strong enough.
Everything sofar is dry fitted.
Hope you enjoy.
Cheers

Today's progress. Managed to cut the dado's for the runners in the sides as well as the drawers as well as sized the runners.
I picked up a mistake I made before. The rebate I cut for the front to sit in meant that it won't slide in under the drawers when removed. That left me with 2 choices, make one line of drawers bigger to fill the bottom void or fix the rebate mistake. I opted to fill in the rebate all around with oak strips. Also make another mistake when cutting the first runner dado, my measurements were off so I had to fill that in as well.
This happens if you don't plan everything out beforehand. I tend to size the outside measurements I want then wing the rest as I go [emoji16].
Anyway, fixing mistakes is part of the hobby for me.
Hope you enjoy.
Cheers

Some progress photos. Need to tweak the top of the drawer 2nd from the bottom and finish the front panel pins. Once I get the brass hardware I'll cut the lid off the top box section.

Drawer gaps tweaked and the brass pins for the front lid installed. Not much more I can do now other than wait for the hardware to arrive from Tradco Australia.

Looking very neat. Did you use someone's plans for this or did you design it up yourself? Interested in what you are waiting for from Tradeco as all their gear seems to be for doors and cabinetry, so quite large.

Thanks, I like the way it's turning out.
The attached Gerstner toolbox is the inspiration. As for the dimensions I just make it up as I go., whatever fits into the outer dimensions which was pre decided.
Seems like Tradco does some smaller stuff as well. I ordered 10mm knobs for the drawers, some handles for the sides, some hinges, latches and a mortise lock. Cost a bit but it's solid brass so should look quite nice once fitted.
They even have 1" butt hinges so I ordered a pair to gauge its quality for my other boxes.

Very well done. Always admire a well made tool chest. Thanks for posting.
And my head I'd be a scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain.
