Valentine's Day Box
Yes, I know I am two weeks late. But Rome wasn't built in a day. So here's a little jewelry box I made for my Sweetie. It is curly maple and bocote with ebony splines in the lid. Hinges are Brusso. The removable sliding top portion is tulipwood.
I still need to line the bottom with something. Can't decide on leather or felt. If I go with felt, what color would best suit these timbers? Black? When all is said and done, there is usually a whole lot more said than done.

Great looking box, and love the timber. As for being late, you could be 50 weeks early . Not sure that I would use black felt though _ dark and heavy in the bottom of this box.

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Hi Cisco, the Tulip wood - WOW! A very beautiful box and the hinges are just superb! Maybe a light coloured felt for the bottom, something that won't detract from the timbers
cheers

Nah, cisco, don't like it, send it to me and I will get rid of it for you. Nice work mate, looks great. Have you thought about flocking the bottom of the box, can look quite attractive.

This is lovely, and the bocote looks like chocolate. I have a soft spot for chocolate.
I think I must be showing how much a novice I am, but I still haven't got to the point where I line box's with anything. I like the wood to show!
Personal preference I guess.

Great box, to really impress you could line the bottom with $100.00 notes, that usually has a positive effect. If not I'd go with Munruben's idea and Flock it in Rust colour, matches and blends win with most colours.
Cheers

Thanks for the kind words, fellow woodworkers. I need some brownie points right now. I am in the dog house for buying a Les Paul without prior written approval. Oh well, nothing I can't dig myself out of with a few kind words and some nice candlelight dinners.

I like the idea of black. I guess you really do need to take the sample of the wood and see if it is good looking with the black.

Stunning box Cisco - great selection of timbers . I would prefer black felt as I feel this would blend better with the colours of the box rather than introduce another colour which would compete with the features of the box.

Really nice box!
I wouldn't use black I would go with one of the natural colors of the box either the color of the tulip wood or a beige to match the sides or a brown same as the lighter tones in the panel inlays.
And did I say nice box???

Thanks again, guys. I took David's advice and ordered some light brown suede from an upholstery supplier. Had to order two yards, but I figure there will be more boxes in my future. I like the idea of suede over felt. The same supplier also carries leather with mock lizard grain. Might have to try that as well.
